Knowledge Graph

What is the Google Knowledge Graph?

The Google Knowledge Graph is a knowledge base system created and set of new richer features from Google first announced in May 2012.

The Knowledge Graph gathers and integrates factual information from various sources across the internet to create a more comprehensive understanding of people, places, things, and their interconnections.

Google’s Knowledge Graph isn’t just rooted in public sources such as Freebase, Wikipedia and the CIA World Factbook. It’s also augmented at a much larger scale—because we’re focused on comprehensive breadth and depth. It currently contains more than 500 million objects, as well as more than 3.5 billion facts about and relationships between these different objects. And it’s tuned based on what people search for, and what we find out on the web.

Google

When a user makes a search query, the Knowledge Graph enables Google to display a box, commonly referred to as a 'Knowledge Panel' alongside the standard search results. This panel contains a summary of key information related to the search, such as dates, images, descriptions, and related searches. For example a search for a famous person might return a panel with their photo, biography, notable works, and related individuals.

The Knowledge Graph is instrumental in semantic search. By understanding the entities and their relationships, Google can better interpret user queries, allowing for more accurate and contextually relevant results.

From an SEO perspective, entities associated with a brand that appear in the Knowledge Graph can significantly enhance visibility and credibility in search results.
